STUDENT PROGRAMS
Adopt a Veteran, Fallen Hero, Holocaust Survivor Program:
The “heart” of the WWII Experience Phase One is the “Adopt a Veteran, Fallen Hero, Holocaust Survivor Program”. This program pairs high school students directly with Veterans, Holocaust Survivors, and/or their families to learn first-hand the incredible stories of these heroes. Our most notable Veteran and student pairing has been Senator & Presidential Nominee Bob Dole and 14 year old high school student, Madison Lillard (see enclosed article). Madison’s presentation of Senator Dole’s WWII experience, as well as one other she completed, will be the first presentations to honor these great warriors on our “Wall of Honor” in the WWII Victory Canteen. The program is simple in its execution and very powerful in its results. The student signs up for the program; their parents give consent and then drive them to the Veteran or Holocaust Survivor’s home where they spend two or more hours in study and direct discussion on their experiences. Copies of memorabilia are made by the school; and the student builds the display with their own words. The lessons are world-changing and the destination the students arrive at is astounding: Freedom isn’t Free, war is horrible, let’s do all we can to never let it happen again. In the end, the question on the T-shirt of the Honor Flight Veterans is all comprehensive: “Imagine if your job description said ‘Save the World?’” What would you do?
